The Sculptural Standouts at Design Miami/ Basel

Taking place at Messeplatz in Basel until Sept. 26, the fair homes in on humanism while delivering the latest in cutting-edge collectible design.

Marking its 15th year as an Art Basel staple, Design Miami/ brings together a selection of the world’s most distinguished galleries and designer presentations to the floor of Messeplatz. This year, the fair followed an environmental and empathetic approach at the hands of Aric Chen, the fair’s curatorial director, who selected “Human Nature” as the overarching theme. Stratus by Markus Hasses

Todd Merrill Studio unveils a breathtaking chandelier by the German sculptor before it takes permanent residence inside The Cortland, a residential building in Chelsea, New York. The nearly 30-foot-long lighting sculpture features interconnected bronze and onyx “vines” and “rings” embedded with LEDs, creating a sweeping landscape of radiant, sculpted illumination.

One of the country’s best croissants is coming to the Mission Rock development in San Francisco.

Arsicault — whose flaky pastries received national acclaim when the Richmond District bakery got Bon Appetit’s “Best New Bakery” prize in 2016 and more recently was determined by Yelp to have one of the top five croissants in the country — will open its third location at the Mission Bay development across from Oracle Park. Owner Armando Lacayo said Mission Rock “represents the future of San Francisco,” and that in addition to the usual baked goods that bring customers to its original Richmond District location, and second Civic Center location, the new outpost will also be “a laboratory for new products.”
